Workshops
We conduct music workshops that explore a broad spectrum of musical traditions and practices originating from Singapore and various cultures across the world.
These workshops are designed to foster a deeper understanding of the cultural, historical, and artistic dimensions of music, highlighting both local heritage and global influences.
Through curated sessions led by experienced practitioners, participants gain insight into the rich diversity of musical expression and its role in shaping intercultural dialogue and appreciation.

New Sights Fellowship Programme 2025
Bhaskar's Arts Academy
The fellows had the opportunity to meet Dr. Ghana, music director of Bhaskar’s Arts Academy and recipient of the Cultural Medallion 2024. They were joined by a group of talented musicians, who provided an immersive learning experience focused on Indian music compositions. The fellows delved into the intricate elements of music specifically designed for Indian dance and theatre productions, with a particular emphasis on understanding the rhythmic structures known as “tala”. Through these lessons, they gained insight into the deep cultural significance of rhythm and melody in traditional Indian performances.
The session included hands-on practice, where the fellows even tried their hands (and voices) at singing, exploring how music and rhythm intertwine to tell a story in Indian performing arts. This experience not only exposed them to the technical aspects of Indian music but also allowed them to appreciate its emotional depth and cultural richness.
Learning about other cultures, especially through music, significantly contributes to a writer’s craft. By exploring the rhythmic complexities, storytelling techniques, and the emotional power of music from different cultures, the fellows expanded their creative horizons. As they begin to compose their own pieces, this knowledge allows them to weave a deeper emotional resonance and to experiment with diverse narrative structures and rhythms in their compositions.
Ultimately, the exposure to Indian music and culture enriches their own writing, encouraging a fusion of influences that can lead to more innovative and nuanced storytelling.

Orkestra Melayu Singapura
As part of our fellowship journey, we had the incredible opportunity to visit Orkestra Melayu Singapura, an ensemble dedicated to preserving and evolving traditional Malay music. From the rhythmic kompang to the haunting melodies of the rebab, and the intricate layers of the gamelan, our fellows got to experience the depth of Malay musical heritage firsthand.
This exchange wasn’t just about trying out new instruments—it was about understanding the soul of a culture through its sound. Traditional Malay music carries rich storytelling elements, complex rhythms, and expressive melodies that have been passed down for generations. By immersing themselves in these unique sounds, the fellows expanded their musical vocabulary and also gained new perspectives. Thank you Orkestra Melayu Singapura for opening your doors and sharing your artistry with us!

New Sights Fellowship Programme 2025
Damaru Singapore
Music is more than just melody—it is rhythm, movement, and storytelling. At Damaru Singapore, the fellows had the opportunity to immerse themselves in the dynamic world of traditional Indian drumming under the guidance of Thiru, a passionate educator dedicated to preserving and evolving the craft.
The fellows were introduced to a wide range of Indian percussion instruments, including the parai, one of the oldest and most significant drums in Indian culture. The session was an immersive experience, allowing participants to not only listen but also feel the rhythm. Through this experience, they began to understand drumming as a powerful form of communication, deeply rooted in rituals, celebrations, and community traditions.
This exploration of polyrhythms, call-and-response patterns, and the raw energy of folk drumming provided valuable insights that will undoubtedly influence their approach to music composition. From the streets of India to the heart of Singapore, these timeless beats serve as a reminder that music is a bridge between past and present, tradition and innovation. This newfound knowledge and experience will surely inspire fresh creative possibilities in their future compositions ✨
