We conduct music workshops that explore a broad spectrum of musical traditions and practices originating from Singapore and various cultures across the world.
These workshops are designed to foster a deeper understanding of the cultural, historical, and artistic dimensions of music, highlighting both local heritage and global influences.
Through curated sessions led by experienced practitioners, participants gain insight into the rich diversity of musical expression and its role in shaping intercultural dialogue and appreciation.
Schools Outreach
National Arts Council x Arts Education Programmes (NAC-AEP) Shows
Pasat Merdu’s NAC-Arts Education Programmes bring Singapore’s multicultural music into schools through live performance, storytelling and participation. Students encounter instruments and musical traditions from Singapore’s different communities, while exploring how music reflects culture, identity and our shared experiences.
Our programmes range from discovering traditional instruments and folk songs to exploring music and migration, improvisation and intercultural collaboration. Through performances, demonstrations, sing-alongs and interactive activities, we invite students not just to learn about different musical traditions, but to listen, participate and experience how musicians from different cultures make music together.
Programmes are suitable for school assemblies and celebrations including Racial Harmony Day, International Friendship Day and National Day, and are designed to be accessible to students regardless of their musical background.

Singapore National Youth Chinese Orchestra
Our Founder, composer Felix Phang, shared his musical journey with the Singapore National Youth Chinese Orchestra through his composition Pasat Merdu. He spoke about the inspirations and considerations behind the work, and how he creates space for different musical voices to coexist, allowing musicians to listen, respond and learn from one another through the music.

Singapore Teachers' Academy for the Arts
Pasat Merdu conducted an intercultural music workshop for Singapore music teachers, hosted by the Singapore Teachers’ Academy for the Arts (STAR). Through hands-on music-making, participants explored how musicians from different cultural practices can listen, respond and create together, while considering how intercultural approaches can be meaningfully applied in their own classrooms and teaching practices.
Tertiary Music Institutions
Lasalle College of the Arts
Our Founder, composer Felix Phang, teaches intercultural music approaches to composition students at LASALLE College of the Arts. His classes encourage students to think about music-making as a social activity, where composing is not only about understanding an instrument, but also the musician playing it.

Each semester, students write for a different intercultural instrumentation, working directly with musicians to understand their musical practices and approaches. Students also manage rehearsals of their own compositions, learning how to communicate, listen, adapt and make creative decisions together with the performers.

Beyond composition, these encounters create opportunities for musicians from different practices to get to know one another, exchange knowledge and widen their own musical horizons.

Intercultural Music in International Schools
Pasat Merdu works with international schools in Singapore to introduce students to the cultural and intercultural music practices found here.
Our engagements range from cultural music workshops to intercultural music composition workshops, offering students opportunities to learn directly from musicians and practitioners.
Through listening, hands-on music-making and creative collaboration, students gain a deeper understanding of Singapore’s diverse musical traditions and how different musical cultures can interact, learn from one another and create together
Special Workshops
Intercultural Music Programmes in collaboration with MOE Arts Education Branch
Pasat Merdu has collaborated with the MOE Arts Education Branch to create intercultural music experiences for Music Elective Programme (MEP) students. Our engagements have included intercultural music arrangement workshops for JC2 students, where they explored ways of working with music from different cultural traditions.

Most recently, Pasat Merdu worked with 50 MEP students from schools across Singapore, guiding them through an intercultural music-making process where they learnt, rehearsed and created alongside musicians from different practices. The project culminated in a performance at the Singapore Youth Festival 2026, as part of its 60th anniversary concert celebrations.
